The Giddy Summit is an online magazine and website devoted to stories about learning new skills, the pursuit of peak experiences, and travel. The stories on this site will describe both the achievement of mastery and the desire for it; they will be both reflective and instructive, encouraging readers to pursue projects or goals that may seem risky or overly ambitious, but that nevertheless remain vital.
The “Giddy Summit” is a phrase drawn from a memoir written by the American writer Jack London. Visiting Hawaii during his voyage across the Pacific in his boat, the Snark, London spent several days learning how to surf. He witnesses one of the native Hawaiians who has navigated a sublime and terrifying “breaker” on a wooden surfboard, and describes him as perched on the “giddy summit” of the wave, an emblem of humanity’s experience at or toward the limits.
